Parks

The City of Kannapolis is home to several wonderful parks. The Parks and Recreation Department is committed to providing safe and positive experiences for all abilities and interests. They also partner with the Kannapolis YMCA, Cabarrus Arts Council, the Kannapolis Library and other organizations to provide programs and events. For more information on the parks, call 704-920-4343.

Cabarrus County Parks and Recreation operates four countywide parks and 39 school parks. These parks provide more than 400 acres of passive and active recreation space, including tournament-quality athletic fields, gymnasiums, playgrounds, picnic sheldters, tennis courts, volleyball and basketball courts, miniature golf, paddleboats, fishing lakes, rental cabins, walking and jogging trails and more.

Football
  • NFL-Carolina Panthers: Bank of America stadium is just 30 minutes from Kellswater Bridge. Treat yourself to one of the NFL’s state-of-the-art facilities.
  • NCAA- Charlotte began hosting the Meineke Car Care Bowl in 2002. Due to the enormous success it will continue to be an annual event. This game is played in the Bank of America Stadium. The Military Classic of the South with the Citadel against the Virginia Military Institute continues to be a long lived football rivalry, and is played each year in downtown Charlotte’s Memorial Stadium.
Basketball
  • NBA-Charlotte Bobcats: North Carolina’s own expansion team located steps away from a variety of office buildings, restaurants, stores and two city transit terminals. It’s also just 30 minutes from Kellswater Bridge.
  • NCAA: Take a short drive and you can watch some of the best basketball in the country. ACC powers Wake Forest, Duke, UNC, and NC State are all less than 2 hours away.
NASCAR
  • Lowe’s Motor Speedway, a 1.5 mile super speedway, is located just 15 minutes from Kellswater Bridge. Among events hosted throughout the year are three NEXTEL Cup Series events, two Busch Series races and a Craftsman Truck series event.
  • zMax Dragstrip is located on 125 acres, just 15 minutes from Kellswater Bridge and adjacent to Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. The ¼ mile tract, pit areas and midway covers 46.5 acres. The grandstands have a total seating capacity of 30,00 including 70 luxury suites.
Golf (PGA)
  • Wachovia Championship in Charlotte: In three short years, the nationa and international golf community has already recognized it as a top event on the PGA Tour.
  • Chrysler Classic of Greensboro: Held at the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro this is the eighth event in the PGA Fall Finish presented by Pricewaterhouse Coopers.
  • Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn: This features a week’s worth of special events and attractions including exhibitions, programs and three days of PGA Champions Tour competition with some of golf’s greatest legends.
  • The Augusta National is not too far away for Masters’ enthusiasts, nor is the Heritage Classic at Harbour Town Links in Hilton Head, SC.
Baseball
  • Kannapolis Intimidators: South Atlantic League and Class A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
  • Charlotte Knights: An AAA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox and a member of the International League.
Hockey
  • NHL-Carolina Hurricanes: The 2006 Stanley Cup champions’ Home Ice is the RBC Center in Raleigh, just over 2 hours away from Kellswater Bridge.
  • Charlotte Checkers: The ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers has seen 12 players rise through the ranks and reach NHL status. The Checkers now play in the new Time Warner Cable Arena in downtown Charlotte, 30 minutes from Kellswater Bridge.
Soccer
  • Charlotte Eagles: Professional soccer entered the region in 1993. The Charlotte Eagles and the Lady Eagles play April-August. Eagles’s games can be attended at various soccer fields in the Charlotte area.

 Museums
Located on U.S. Hwy 29 thirty minutes from Kellswater Bridge on the site of what was once Southern Railways Company’s largest steam locomotive repair facility. This site features an authentic train depot, antique automobiles, and a 31 –bay Roundhouse that includes 25 locomotives and dozens of railcars. It offers seasonal train rides and scheduled guided tours.
  • Reed Gold Mine
Located in Cabarrus County, just 30 minutes from Kellswater Bridge, the mine is the site of the first gold discovery in America. Reed Gold Mine features a 20 minute film on history of gold in North Carolina, tour through mine, operating ore mill, and gold panning.
The museum offers exhibits in science and technology with hands-on displays to intrigue young and old alike. It is home to an Omnimax theater and planetarium. It is in downtown Charlotte and is only 30 minutes from Kellswater Bridge.
This is an urban science center that exhibits animals and plants of the Piedmont including an ever-changing Butterfly Garden.
 
Zoos
Located on N.C. 150 this is a drive through animal park with 450 exotic animals, 3.5 miles of roads on 185 acres. Provides drive-through tours during all four seasons that include baby animals in spring, picnic areas in the summer, wagon rides and pumpkin sales in fall, and Santa and a live Nativity scene in winter. Tours are provided.
Located approximately 40 miles from Kellswater Bridge, the NC Zoo is on a 1,500 tract of land in the Uwharrie Mountains. It is one of the largest “natural habitat” zoos in the United States.
            
 Cultural Arts
The Blumenthal PAC is home to ten outstanding arts organizations including ArtsTeach, Carolina Voices, Carolinas Concert Association, Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Community School of the Arts, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Opera Carolina, and The Light Factory. This beautiful, busy facility is 30 minutes from Kellswater.
The Davis Theatre was created from the former courtroom in the historic Cabarrus County courthouse and has 231 seats, providing an intimate setting to see professional touring performances.
A spacious, recently renovated auditorium located on the campus of A. L. Brown High School, Kannapolis, this center provides a professional stage for the N.C. Symphony, N.C. School of the Arts performances, local dance and music recitals.
Live concerts performed, rain or shine, by nationally known recording artists and located 20 minutes from Kellswater Bridge.
Various dramatic and musical productions performed four times yearly by local actors.
The galleries are located on the first floor of the 1876 historic Cabarrus courthouse at 65 Union Street South, Concord just minutes from Kellswater. The Galleries display works by regional and national artists working in a variety of media.
The symphony is the largest and most active professional performing arts organization in the central Carolinas. Its principal home is the acoustically acclaimed 1,970–seat Belk Theater of the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in downtown Charlotte and only 30 minutes from Kellswater.
 
 Theme Parks
Located off I-77 at exit 90, the 105 acre park features more than 50 rides, show and attractions, plus a 13 acre water park. The park offers concerts at the Palladium theatre and Scarowinds Fright Fest in October. About 30 miles from Kellswater.
The nation's premier outdoor recreation and environmental education center offers Olympic athletes, weekend warriors, families, aspiring outdoor enthusiasts—ANYONE at any skill level a chance to make healthy active living and environmental stewardship a part of daily life. Offers whitewater rafting and kayaking, flatwater canoeing and kayaking, bouldering, climbing and 11 miles of the best mountain biking, hiking and running trails in the region. About 30 miles from Kellswater.
 
Libraries
The county library system has excellent branches within easy access of Kellswater Bridge. In Kannapolis the library is located at 850 Mountain Street and in Concord the branch is located at 27 Union Street South.

There are two excellent YMCA’s located within minutes of Kellswater. One is on George Liles Blvd. and the other at 101 YMCA Drive in Kannapolis.
